Buy Gold Maple Leafs

23 Apr 2018 - Coins

The Canadian gold Maple Leaf coin is perhaps one of the most renowned and well recognized gold coins worldwide. Add to that its relatively low premium and its high quality, and this gold coin makes an excellent choice for those looking to buy gold coins or to invest in gold bullion.

The History of the Gold Maple Leaf Coin

The Royal Canadian Mint first launched the Maple Leaf coin in gold bullion in 1979, and it was instantly popular. In the late 1970's the idea of retail gold and silver bullion products for individual investors started to gain popularity as demand for investment gold and silver coins and bars increased. The Royal Canadian Mint initially launched the gold Maple Leaf in 1 Ounce size only, and the coin contained 999 fine investment grade gold bullion (22 carat).

The popularity of the gold Maple Leaf coin was in part due to the fact that, at that time, it was one of the only gold coins being manufactured for the retail investment market. The other coin that was being produced at that time was the South African Krugerrand. However, this was harder to purchase due to Apartheid sanctions.

However, due to the coin's popularity, in 1982 the Royal Canadian Mint started launching fractional gold bullion coins in sizes, including 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce and 1/10 ounce. Smaller denominations, including 1/20 and 1/25 ounce were also launched at a later date. In 1982 the Royal Canadian Mint also increased the purity of the Maple Leaf coin from 999 fine to 9999 fine (24 carat).

Since that time, the Maple Leaf has continued to grow in popularity as one of the most demanded gold coins among precious metals investors. The Royal Canadian Mint also launched the Maple Leaf coin in silver, platinum and palladium.

In 2007, the Royal Canadian Mint launched the 99999 fine gold Maple Leaf coin. This coin is the purest gold coin that has ever been available to retail gold bullion investors.

About the Gold Maple Leaf

With the exception of the 1 Ounce gold Maple Leaf coins that were minted from 1979-1982, all gold Maple Leaf coins contain at least 99.99 fine investment grade gold bullion. The Maple Leaf series is available to those looking to buy gold coins in a range of sizes, including 1 gram, 1/25 ounce, 1/20 ounce, 1/10 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/2 ounce and 1 ounce sizes. The front of each coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the front. Beneath this portrait, the coin's face value and year of minting are inscribed. The reverse of each coin features an image of the famous Canadian Maple Leaf. The coin's purity can be found on either side of the Maple Leaf image, and the coin's size is written below.

Gold Maple Leaf Face Values
1 Ounce $50.00
1/2 Ounce $20.00
1/4 Ounce $10.00
1/10 Ounce $5.00
1/20 Ounce $1.00
1/25 Ounce $0.50

One ounce and fractional gold Maple Leaf coins are sold either in a plastic slip or in a plastic tube, depending on the quantity purchased. The 99999 fine gold Maple leaf is sold sealed in its own certicard. This is due to that fact that the coin is 99999 fine gold bullion which makes it relatively soft, and therefore more susceptible to damage. The gold Maple Leaf coins are so popular with precious metals investors that the Royal Canadian Mint recently also launched a one ounce gold Canadian Maple Leaf bar. For individuals and gold investors looking to buy gold coins or gold bars, the Maple Leaf series from the Royal Canadian Mint is an excellent option. SwissBullion.eu carry both the gold coin and the gold bar for worldwide delivery and for Swiss precious metals storage.
