The maple leaf gold coins are a symbol of Canadian history; featuring the maple leaf, the national symbol of Canada since 1700s. The maple leaf coins were introduced for the first time in 1979. From the time the maple leaf coins were minted, they have not undergone any major changes in design. The coins have retained a simple yet elegant design that depicts a detailed image of the maple leaf.

The maple leaf on the backside, is surrounded by values that indicate the purity levels of the gold alongside the word “Canada.” The newer versions of the maple leaf gold coin are authenticated by the Canadian Royal Mint through a micro-engraving design done by a laser. The deign of the laser micro-engraving is changed every year, but the last two digits always corresponds with the year the coins were minted.
