The design was created by John Mercanti and depicts the spread-eagle with a shield over its chest and brandishing arrows clenched between the left claw and the olive branch in the right. Above the eagles head is a pyramid of 13 stars which represent the 13 original colonies. The “W" mint mark indicates the coins were manufactured at the US Mint facility in West Point.
