The United States Mint

The United States Mint, located in Washington D.C., produces all circulated coins for the United States government, as well as controlling the production of American legal tender bullion. The United States Mint, especially in Fort Knox, is highly regarded as being one of the most secure and guarded facilities in the entire world.

History of the United States Mint

The United States Mint, established in 1792, holds a rich and fascinating history as the nation's official producer of coins and medals. The mint's origins can be traced back to the Coinage Act passed by the United States Congress, under President George Washington's administration. The Act mandated the creation of a mint to alleviate the scarcity of coins in circulation and solidify the country's economic stability. The mint's first facility was established in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and began producing copper, silver, and gold coins. Over the years, additional mint branches were opened in different cities, including Denver, San Francisco, and West Point, to meet the increasing demand for currency and precious metals. The United States Mint remains an integral institution in American history, embodying the nation's monetary sovereignty and minting iconic coins that reflect the evolving spirit of the United States.

Throughout its history, the United States Mint has been responsible for producing a vast array of coinage and commemoratives that have become treasured artifacts. Notable coins minted by the institution include the iconic Morgan Silver Dollar, which became a symbol of the American West during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the Lincoln Cent, first introduced in 1909 to commemorate Abraham Lincoln's 100th birthday. The mint has also played a significant role during times of crisis and war. During World War II, the mint contributed to the war effort by producing critical metals like zinc and copper for military use. In recent years, the United States Mint has expanded its offerings to include special editions, collectibles, and commemorative medals, showcasing the nation's rich cultural heritage and honoring significant events and individuals. Today, the United States Mint stands as a testament to the nation's enduring commitment to its currency system and the artistry and craftsmanship of minting coins.

Bullion Coins Manufactured by the United States Mint

The Gold St. Gauden Coin

The St. Gauden gold coin was manufactured by the United States Mint from 1907 until 1933. The coin was designed by Augustus St. Gauden. The elegant design of the coin was inspired by the actions of American President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1904 Roosevelt passed legislation designed to improve the design of American coinage. The design of the gold St. Gauden was submitted by St. Gauden, who passed away in 1907, the year that the coin was launched.

Each gold St. Gauden coin has a face value of $20 USD, and contains 30.5 grams of gold. The front of the coin features an image of Lady Liberty walking, with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The sun is rising behind her. The reverse side of the coin features an image of an Eagle flying, with the sun shining behind him. The words ‘In God We Trust’ are inscribed above the sun, and the coin’s face value is written at the top.

Gold St. Gauden coins are only available in one size.

The Gold Buffalo Coin

The gold Buffalo coin was launched by the United States Government in 2006. The coin is the only 24 karat (or 999.9 fine) gold coin currently manufactured by the United States Mint. The design of the American Buffalo gold coin was modelled after the American Indian Head Nickel, with an image of an Indian Chief on the front, and an American Bison on the reverse.

The 1-ounce American Buffalo gold coin is available in 1-ounce size and has a face value of $50 USD. Like all American coins, the words ‘In God we Trust’ are inscribed on the reverse of the coin. The buffalo gold coin has been in circulation continuously since 2006.
