Design of the American Platinum Eagle

The design on the back of the American Platinum Eagle Bullion Coin is changed yearly based on a series that is dependent on the current theme determined by the current Chief Engraver of the US Mint. Several individuals have designed the American Platinum Eagle Bullion coin including Thomas D Rogers who designed the very first coin in 1997, Donna Weaver, who did the 2005 edition and Justin Kunz who did the 2018 and 19 editions together with renowned Sculptor, Joseph Menna.

Front Design

Unlike the rear design of the American Platinum Eagle, the front design does not change. The original front design of the coin was done by the Chief Engraver of the US Mint, John Mercanti back in 1997. The design is a depiction of the statue of Liberty. Below the statue is the year the coin was minted and the four words that feature on all US currencies, “In God We Trust.”

Rear Design

The rear design changes on a yearly basis. Currently, the design on the back features the work of designer Justin Kunz and Sculptor Joseph Menna. On the top of the main design are the words, “E Pluribus Unum” which is the preamble to the US Declaration of independence. The main design is an engraving of Lady Liberty.
