In 2009, to celebrate the 20^th Anniversary of the Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coins, the Austrian Mint created the 20 Oz Vienna Philharmonic Coin that had a face value of €2000. The hurdle in producing the coin was that it cost €14000 per coin to create. The minting of this denomination was discontinued and there are currently 6,027 Vienna Philharmonic 20 Oz Gold Coins available in the world.

Coin Design

Front Design

The Austrian Philharmonic Gold Coin was designed to honor the great Austrian Philharmonic Orchestra. The design of the coin is attributed to Thomas Pesendorfer, an Austrian born, and bred designer. On the front of the bullion investment coin is the Great Organ also referred to as the Musikverein Pipe Organ found in Vienna’s Golden Hall. Below the Musikverein Pipe Organ is the year of issue, the gold content and the coins worth.

Rear Design

The rear design is an engraving of common orchestra instruments which includes a hard, 5 violins, a cello, bassoon, and a Viennese horn. On designing the rear, the designer, Thomas Pesendorfer wanted to clearly depict what the coin represents, music. “Wiener Philharmoniker” are the words inscribed on the top of the coin, the words translate to “Vienna Philharmonic.”

The Austrian Philharmonic Gold Coin was minted in 1989. Originally, before the creation of the ¼, 1/10 and 1/25 ounce denominations, the coin was produced in only two denominations - the 1 ounce and the ½ ounce denominations. A year after its creation, in 1990, the Vienna Philharmonic Gold Coin was the bestselling bullion type investment coin throughout Europe and second in the world.
